This post doesn’t really have anything to do with politics, it’s more of an observation on society in general.
I don’t get the fascination that the American society has with movie star’s private lives or the popularity of such TV programs like “Here comes Honey Boo Boo” and “Bad Girls Club”. I understand why the networks love them, they are very cheap to produce and have high viewer numbers. That’s the part I don’t understand, why does anyone watch these programs?
They show people in situations that are not the norm and present that as “real life” when it is anything but. They show people exhibiting reprehensible, atrocious behavior and present it as being perfectly acceptable.
They show people who’s only “accomplishment” is being born rich, who are “famous” for being famous, nothing else. They have no real skills, no accomplishments to be proud of. Their one claim to fame is the apparent skill of being able to have their attorneys get them off and thumb their nose at the legal system, just to go out and behave badly all over again.
Yet these pieces of trash are what’s held up to our kids as role models.
Is it any wonder that our society is in the shape it’s in today? Having 300 cable channels isn’t particularly a good thing.
What put me on this little tirade this morning was the nominations for the Golden Globes. It seems like, at least this is how the press portrays it, the entire population is hanging on the edge, waiting with baited breath for the awards.
All this is is an awards celebration, set up by the industry to promote that industry. All it is is several hours of people saying “look at me, look how ‘famous’ I am, how ‘good’ I am at what I do”. Several hours of people patting themselves on the back.
Why don’t they have awards programs for people who are TRULY important. The ones who save lives, try to better the world, ease suffering? Why? because most people that are involved in truly meaningful, important work are too busy actually DOING SOMETHING IMPORTANT to be involved in something that is trivial and meaningless. They have more important work to do.
Like I said, I don’t get it.
